Winter Warmup: Critical Approaches to AI in Teaching & Learning In-Person

Join QILT and the Office of the Provost for a day of critical engagement with the ways AI informs our teaching.

Schedule

Sessions are designed for all, regardless of your familiarity or comfort with AI tools, and will support conversations related to AI across disciplines. You may register for as many sessions as you’re interested in!

8:30 - 9 a.m. Refreshments & Networking

9 - 9:15 a.m. Welcome from Provost

9:15-  10:30 a.m. AI and Information Literacy, facilitated by Matt Flaherty
This session will discuss how AI changes the information literacy landscape, what your students experience and need to know, and how to identify the specific information literacy issues that affect your discipline. You’ll have an opportunity to talk with colleagues about how all of this impacts your classroom and whether or how you might adjust your approach.

10:30 - 10:45 a.m. Break

10:45 a.m. - Noon TILT your AI Syllabus Policy, facilitated by Sara Rzeszutek & Caitlin Hanlon
This workshop will help you apply a Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) approach to your AI syllabus policy. With colleagues, you’ll talk through your ideas about your policy, how it reflects your pedagogical values and disciplinary standards, and how to help students understand why your unique approach to AI supports their learning. You’ll have time to develop or revise your policy and get feedback during this session.

Noon - 1 p.m. Lunch
For those who are not attending the CAS event for lunch, please provide your dietary restrictions and register for this lunch so we have an accurate count for catering.

1 - 2 p.m. Breakout sessions - Using AI

Intro to AI, facilitated by Alex D'Adamo
This session will provide foundations for understanding AI tools, what AI can and can’t do, the benefits and drawbacks of AI technologies, and time to experiment on your own.

Upskilling Your AI Abilities, facilitated by Adam Nemeroff and Joel Vanner
This session will provide an opportunity for those familiar with AI tools to explore more complex AI functions, including more advanced prompting, custom chatbots, and promising new tools.

2 - 2:15 p.m. Break

2:15 - 3:30 p.m. Breakout sessions - Assignments in the age of AI

AI Resilient Assignments, facilitated by David Kocik and Sara Rzeszutek
This session will help you develop or revise assignments that encourage students to do the work without engaging in unsanctioned AI use. We’ll discuss aspects of scaffolding, transparent design, how to incorporate AI where you do want it, how to gain student buy-in on the work you ask them to do, and ways to cultivate a relationship of mutual trust around course expectations.

AI in Assignments, facilitated by Stephanie Jacobson, Jordan Jefferson, and Kiku Jones
This session provides ideas for incorporating student AI use into assignments from a range of disciplinary perspectives. We’ll talk about how to decide when AI is the right tool for the task, how to guide students in ethical and critical use, and how to connect the AI skills you develop to career-ready AI competencies.

3:30 - 5 p.m. Hot cocoa & cookie decorating
Wrap up the day by having fun with a sweet activity that AI can’t do for us. Please indicate if you will attend so that we will have enough supplies!
